For the third figure, we decided to develop something from one of Bill’s designs. Bill is actually the first Artist we worked with on anything Lucha Libre. Several years ago Jerry and Bill developed a “Luchadores5” short story that became the springboard for all things Lucha Libre. As such, he must have been a bit bummed that we didn’t use one of his original character designs for our first two figures.
Well, now it was his time to shine in the toy world!
After much discussion, we decided that Red Demon would be the perfect character for our next figure. What was nice about Red Demon was that he was everything that Tequila and El Panda were not. He was slender and cool. If it weren’t for the wrestling mask, you wouldn’t really think of him as a Luchador. But there was a swagger to him…a strong sense of style that was infectious.
Bill did an amazing job at capturing his style with the stance he created for him. We were a bit nervous on how stable we could make the figure based on that stance…but it was so perfect, and we had great trust in Monster5’s abilities…so we decided to go with it.
Having worked with Monster5 on the two previous figures he knew exactly what we wanted and delivered a gorgeous sculpt. Our tweaks to his sculpt were minimal…I think the most “drastic” thing we asked him to do is get rid of any signs of a nose which really places emphasis on the mask instead of the face underneath the mask.
